Questions

Fence calculator questions

What size are standard fence panels?

Most UK panels are 1.83 m (6 ft) wide and come in heights from 0.9 m to 1.8 m. The calculator assumes 1.83 m wide panels with 100 mm posts.

How deep do fence posts go?

About a quarter of the post, and at least 600 mm, so a 1.8 m fence needs 2.4 m timber posts or 2.36 m slotted concrete posts.

Why one more post than panels?

Every panel sits between two posts, so a straight run always needs one more post than panels. Each separate run or break adds another end post.

Do I need planning permission for a fence?

Usually not up to 2 m high, or 1 m next to a road or its pavement. Listed buildings and some conservation areas are different. Use our free planning check for your address.
